Balkan Horses Band - Contact: Part One (UBP044)
Music CD
'During the last few decades the
existence of dictatorships and
totalitarian rule in the countries
of the region raised confrontation
in a political, economical and
cultural aspect. As a result the
peoples of the Balkan Peninsula
separated themselves in closed
systems, not knowing the cultural
and public life of their neighbors.
We witnessed the bursting genocide
on the territory of former
Yugoslavia, exercising strong
destabilizing influence over the
relations between different ethnic
groups in the other Balkan states,
as well. In spite of these somewhat
artificially created clashes the
Balkans continue to be a united
field of culture and spirit, the
most explicit expression of which we
find in the sphere of arts and most
of all music.
UNESCO’s proclaiming the year of
2000 as the International Year of
Culture and Peace inspired AQUA
STORM Music and Performing Arts
Agency to be the initiator of the
idea of creation of a Balkan
Cultural Project in the field of
Ethno and World Music. Nine of the
most distinguished Ethno, Rock,
Jazz, Ambience and New Age composers
and performers participated in the
Balkan Horses Band International
orchestra.'

The Great Voices of Bulgaria - Anthology (UBP045)
Music CD
An anthology of the best Bulgarian
choir songs sung by Women's, Men's
and mixed choirs. Some tracks with
accordion accompaniment.
'When you hear a Bulgarian folk
song, you are astounded, chills
creep up your spine, and your heart
seems to skip a beat. The women from
the Southeastern Balkans, regardless
of their age, have an amazing vocal
power, although it is more a
question of vibrations and vocal
technique rather than decibels.
Bulgarian people understood a long
time ago that the human voice is
much more expressive in song than it
could be in speech. Therefore,
singing has been given top priority
in the Bulgarian tradition of
artistic expression. The perfection
that lies at the base of traditional
folklore took decades of hard work
and was passed down from generation
to generation for centuries on end.
The Women’s Choir of Sofia is a
group of professional singers which
has existed for more than 35 years,
directed since 1980 by Zdravko
Mihaylov. It is thanks to this
conductor that its repertoire has
expanded to include the whole range
of traditional Bulgarian music
composed with modern harmony and
polyphony, or based on themes taken
from folk songs.
